Is It Right For You?

Is physical therapy at home right for me or my parent?

Physical therapy at home may be a fit if your doctor says you need therapy and leaving home takes a lot of effort. Tap anything below that sounds like you or someone you love.

What does “homebound” mean?
  • Leaving home is not recommended because of your condition, or you have trouble leaving without help.
  • You are normally unable to leave home, and leaving takes a lot of effort.
  • You may need a walker, wheelchair or another person’s help.
  • Homebound does not mean you can never leave home.

Medicare may cover home health care when eligibility requirements are met, including a doctor’s or provider’s plan of care, a need for skilled care, and homebound status.

Questions

Physical therapy at home: your questions answered

What is physical therapy at home?

Physical therapy at home is treatment from a licensed physical therapist in your own home. It helps you walk, balance, build strength and move safely.

How is it different from outpatient physical therapy?

With home health, the therapist comes to you. It is for people who are homebound, meaning leaving home is difficult and takes a lot of effort.

Does Medicare cover physical therapy at home?

Original Medicare may cover home health services from a Medicare-certified agency when eligibility requirements are met, including a doctor’s or provider’s plan of care, a need for skilled care, and homebound status. We can explain your options.

Do I need a doctor’s order before I call?

No. Call us first. If home health is appropriate, we coordinate with your doctor or other health care provider to obtain the necessary order.

What can a physical therapist help with at home?

A therapist can help with walking, balance, strength, stairs, getting in and out of bed or a chair, and recovery after a hospital stay or surgery.

Can physical therapy at home help after a fall, surgery or hospital stay?

Yes, it often does. A therapist works with you on strength, balance and safe movement, with a plan that follows your doctor’s orders.

What happens at the first visit?

Your therapist checks your strength, balance and walking, looks at your home for safety, and sets goals with you. Your plan follows your doctor’s orders.

How often will a therapist visit, and for how long?

Visit frequency follows your doctor’s orders and your needs. Therapy is usually short-term and goal-driven, and it continues while you are making progress.
